Depression

Now, I don’t know about you, but I do not like to use labels to categorize people because that keeps them stuck and limits their ability to transcend situations and find another way forward.  It misses the mark completely. You are always more than what appears to be happening for you and you have the inner power to heal your life.

Depression is an interesting state of mind! Been there and done that a few times in my life with things that occurred that were very difficult to deal with so I do understand that some people will require medication temporarily, at some point, to help them calm down and then be able to move forward and there is nothing wrong in that. However, when people are told that they will have to be on medication for the rest of their lives, it is like being given a death sentence with no reprieve!

Sometimes, depression can be a resting place for us when we have had enough of the world, of being misunderstood, of fighting what we might see as an uphill battle, of struggling with situations we feel we are ill-equipped to deal with.

At other times, something unexpected may happen out of the blue and shock us to such an extent that we retreat into depression in order to try and cope somehow. Maybe our world as we knew it has been turned upside down and now we don’t know what to believe any more; our foundations have been shaken and we cannot find solid ground to stand on, or, maybe someone we thought cared about us has betrayed out trust and broken our hearts. Maybe we are a very sensitive and idealistic soul who wants to change humanity but we constantly meet with challenges and opposition to the point where we unconsciously take on the sadness and futility in the world and become depressed.

No matter what the situation is, if we do not understand that underlying issue of depression, we can medicate ourselves silly but that will not help us in the long run because the problem will still be there for us to face. We also have the solution even though we may not be aware of it!

If we can understand that maybe we need some rest, maybe we are exhausted, maybe we need to learn to say “no” to others instead of allowing them to drain our energy, we would begin to accept where we are and allow healing to take place.

Maybe we just need some time to ourselves, to make sense of what has occurred. Maybe we just need to slow down and accept what we are feeling first and let that be okay, so that by sitting “with” whatever we are feeling as if it is a guest instead of “sitting in it and becoming it”, we honour it and allow its wisdom to guide us.

Depression can be a way for you to get to know yourself better and to recognise what you need to do or say in order to be happy. Maybe you just need to value your own self instead of running around and doing for everyone else. Maybe you just need some peace. Maybe you just need to realize that you are important and that you have a purpose in life.

Just know that there is always a way out if you will give yourself time, allow yourself to become curious and discover what is really going on deep within you that the depression may be masking. If you are willing to face the truth then you can move forward into more joy and fulfilment.

Until next time,
